What are Emotions?  Understanding Energy, Frequency, and the Key to Emotional Health

When it comes to our mental, physical, and spiritual well-being, our emotions impact us more directly than most anything. But what are emotions, exactly? Where do they go when we don’t deal with them? And what can we do to feel better, heal faster, and stay balanced?

Understanding emotions is the first step toward freedom, so let’s go back to the basics and explore the truth about emotions.

Emotions Are Energy in Motion

Emotions are energy in motion. Each emotion we feel carries a specific vibrational frequency that can be measured. When we feel an emotion like joy, love, or gratitude, our energy vibrates at a higher frequency. When we feel sadness, fear, or shame, our vibration becomes lower and heavier.

Science shows that our bodies emit electromagnetic frequencies, and our emotional states influence these fields.

The Emotional Frequency Scale: High vs. Low

Here’s a simple way to visualize it:

  • High-vibration emotions: Joy, love, peace, gratitude, inspiration, empowerment

  • Mid-range emotions: Acceptance, courage, willingness, neutrality

  • Low-vibration emotions: Fear, anger, guilt, shame, hopelessness

All emotions are valid—none are “bad.” But those lower-vibration emotions can be more challenging to hold for long periods without affecting our energy, health, and mindset. And when these emotions aren’t processed or expressed, they can become trapped. Below is a chart of emotions in the order of frequencies that helps you visualize the differences between positive and negative emotions.

What Happens When Emotions Get Trapped?

When an emotion isn’t fully processed—maybe because the situation felt too overwhelming at the time, or we were taught to suppress it, or we are just so busy in our day-to-day lives that we don’t have time to process what we’re feeling-emotions can literally get stuck in the body as a ball of energetic frequency.

These trapped emotions can:

  • Create blocks in your energy flow

  • Contribute to chronic stress, fatigue, or even physical pain

  • Trigger reactive patterns and emotional outbursts

  • Sabotage your goals or relationships from behind the scenes

Many of the emotional triggers we have today aren’t about what’s happening now—they’re rooted in unprocessed emotions from the past.  For example, if you have a lot of trapped emotions such as anger, trapped in your body, it wouldn’t be uncommon for you to “snap” or “lose it” more easily than someone who doesn’t have that trapped in their body.

Why Do We Struggle to Process Emotions?

Most of us weren’t taught what is now being referred to as “emotional hygiene”. We were taught to “be strong,” “stay positive,” or “get over it.” But that’s not how energy works.

Processing emotions is not the same as ignoring them, venting about them endlessly, or trying to think your way out. It means feeling them fully, acknowledging their message, and allowing them to move through the body.

How to Start Processing Emotions in a Healthy Way

Here are some powerful ways to begin:

  1. Pause and Name the Emotion
“I feel frustrated,” “I feel sad,” “I feel afraid.” Naming it brings awareness and reduces the emotional charge.

  2. Feel It Without Judgment
Let the emotion move through you without needing to fix or analyze it. Breathe into it. Trust that it won’t last forever.

  3. Use Movement or Breath
Emotions are energy, and energy loves movement. Try shaking, stretching, walking, deep breathing, or even crying it out.  Even punching a pillow or screaming into one can help!

  4. Write or Speak It Out
Journaling or voicing your feelings helps clear mental clutter and prevent emotional build-up.  I recommend setting a timer for 10 minutes and writing non stop whatever comes to mind without filtering it.  Don’t analyze what you’re writing, or even bother making it legible.  When the ten minutes is up, tear it up and throw it away.

  5. Release with Energy Healing
If an emotion has already become trapped, energy healing methods like the Emotion Code can help identify and release it quickly and gently.

Below is an image of an emotion wheel that can really help you pinpoint what emotion you’re feeling.  Sometimes finding the precise description of how you feel makes it easier to let go of.

You’re Meant to Feel—and Heal

You were never meant to suppress your emotions or be overwhelmed by them. You were meant to move through them. Every emotion carries a message, and every feeling wants to move you toward healing, clarity, and freedom.

By understanding the energetic nature of emotions and learning to work with them instead of against them, you’ll feel more in tune with yourself—and more empowered to create the life you truly want.  I like to think of emotions as little tour guides, guiding me through life and each one is sending me a message and helping direct me along the path. Some emotions may make you realize you need a detour, while other ones may provide encouraging messages that you’re on the right path.
