How Trapped Emotions (and other Energetic Imbalances) Influence the Mind and Body
In Dr. Bradley Nelson’s work—the Emotion Code, Body Code, and Belief Code—the body is viewed as an intelligent, interconnected system of energy, information, and physical processes. I truly believe it is the most complex machine ever created. And we each own one!!
Every experience we have is processed not only through the mind, but also through the body’s energetic field. If a person doesn’t process the experience fully, it can lead to imbalances that influence how they feel emotionally and how the body functions physically. It’s important to note that even though the imbalance may be “subtle” it can have a dramatic effect in the body. I think of it as if a person turns the steering wheel of the car just a centimeter to the right as they drive down a long straight highway, over time they will end up in the ditch. Not a small mistake!
Trapped Emotions
Trapped emotions are one of the most common energetic imbalances I find when working with clients. A trapped emotion is an emotional energy that becomes lodged in the body instead of being fully processed and released. This can happen when an emotion is too intense in the moment, when we suppress or avoid feeling it, or when the body becomes overwhelmed and it can’t deal with it yet. Instead of moving through the system naturally, the emotional energy is stored in the body and “saved for later”. We humans are good at procrastinating, and this goes for processing our emotions too.
Over time, this stored emotional energy can begin to influence the body. Each trapped emotion is roughly the size of your fist and can disrupt the energetic field of the body. Our physical body mimics the energetic body, so it’s important to keep the energy field clear and healthy. The body relies on clear communication within its systems, and when there is interference in the energy field, that communication can become distorted. This may show up as areas of tension, discomfort, or dysfunction. For example, a trapped emotion in the chest area may contribute to tightness, altered breathing patterns, or strain in the surrounding muscles. The body is always working to maintain balance, but energetic interference can make that process very difficult.
These imbalances don’t only affect the physical body. They also affect the way we think, feel, and respond to the world. Trapped emotions carry the frequency of the original emotional experience, and that energy can influence the subconscious mind. As a result, a person may find themselves experiencing recurring emotional patterns that don’t always seem to match their current circumstances. Someone with a trapped emotion of fear may feel excess worry in situations that are actually safe, while a trapped emotion related to rejection may influence confidence or the ability to feel secure in relationships. In this way, the mind is always interacting with stored emotional energy, without our conscious awareness.
Heart-Wall
Dr. Nelson also discovered something he calls the Heart-Wall. A Heart-Wall is a collection of trapped emotions that forms around the heart, as a form of protection during times of emotional pain. This protective wall can be helpful in the moment when you’re going through a difficult situation, but over time it may limit your ability to experience emotions and make connection with other people difficult. People with a Heart-Wall may feel guarded, disconnected, or unable to fully experience feelings like love, joy, or vulnerability. As these layers are released, many individuals notice a sense of openness and emotional flow. Clients often tell me they “feel like themselves” again, after their Heart-Wall is gone. A helpful way to picture the Heart-Wall is a wall in your home with many layers of paint on it. We work by removing one layer at a time and only remove what the body is willing to release. There can be up to a hundred or more emotions in someone’s heart-wall, depending on their life experiences.
The Body Code
The Body Code goes deeper than trapped emotions, and considers structural misalignments that can influence the body in very real and sometimes surprising ways. When parts of the body are even slightly out of alignment, it can create stress on surrounding tissues, disrupt circulation, or interfere with nerve communication. Misalignments are not only physical but also energetic, which means the body’s blueprint itself may be out of balance. As I mentioned previously, the physical body mimics the energy body. The energy body is “the boss” and in charge.
For example, misalignments in the feet or lower body may contribute to conditions like plantar fasciitis, where ongoing strain and improper support affect how the body distributes weight and absorbs impact. A misalignment in the pelvis or spine may influence fluid movement in the body, which in some cases can be connected to water retention. When the structure is off, the body may not circulate fluids as efficiently as it should.
Misalignments can also play a role in how the nervous system responds to stress. If there is imbalance affecting the spine, cranial bones, or surrounding tissues, it may contribute to heightened nervous system sensitivity. This can be one factor behind experiences like panic or anxiety patterns, where the body is more easily triggered into a stress response. Misalignments in the head or facial bones may influence pressure patterns, circulation, or nerve pathways, which can contribute to recurring headaches or tension in the jaw, temples, or forehead.
The body is constantly adapting, compensating, and communicating. When one area is out of alignment, other areas may compensate, creating a chain reaction that affects both physical comfort and emotional regulation over time. When I work with clients to resolve an issue, it can take more than one session to get through all the layers that have accumulated over time, but each session allows more space to open up in the energy field and things start to flow more easily.
In addition to structural issues, the Body Code also addresses other types of imbalances such as toxins, nutritional deficiencies, pathogens, and system disruptions. Each of these can interfere with the body’s ability to function optimally, especially when combined with trapped emotions or misalignments. The more layers of imbalance that are present, the harder the body may have to work to maintain stability.
The Belief Code
The Belief Code adds another important layer by addressing subconscious beliefs that are held in the body as energetic patterns. These beliefs are often formed through past experiences, inherited influences, or repeated thought patterns, and they can shape how a person perceives themselves and the world around them. When limiting beliefs are present, they can influence behavior, emotional responses, and even physical outcomes. Because they operate at the subconscious level, they go unnoticed, yet they can direct many aspects of a person’s life unknowingly.
The mind and body are not separate systems. They are constantly communicating through energy, and any disruption in that communication can create patterns of stress, imbalance, or dysfunction. When trapped emotions, energetic imbalances, and limiting beliefs are present, they can keep the system in a reactive state, making it more difficult for the body to return to balance.
When these imbalances are identified and released using the techniques from the Emotion Code, Body Code, and Belief Code, the body is able to function more as it was designed to. Without interference, the body can regulate, repair, and restore itself more effectively. Many people experience a sense of lightness, improved emotional stability, greater clarity, and relief from physical discomfort. Rather than forcing change, this work is about removing what is in the way, allowing the body and mind to return to a more natural state of balance and well-being. The body is incredibly intelligent and knows how to heal. During my sessions, the focus is on removing the energetic blocks from your body that are keeping it from doing what it needs to do to keep you healthy and strong. I am not the healer, but the facilitator. Your body does the healing.
